Symposium

The Conference is a collaboration between the Research Department of the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), the Centre for Research in Art & Design, University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) and the six co-organising partners.

"CONTESTED SPACE" is the proposed title of a conference that will involve contributions from speakers from the co-organizing countries. Speaker address the curators theme and devolve the wider and deeper significance of these within the context of their origin and the global production of space. Presentations will provide a platform for critical debate, and issues and texts emerging from the colloquium will be included in the final catalogue.

Themes

The conference themes are being developed at present and uploaded in the near future. Some of the ideas will include:

'Contested Space': Communities, Culture and the Politics of Place'.

Speakers will address issues concerning place and identity within trans-national productions of space.

'Place in Knowledge'.

The 'place' of knowledge will be discussed through an exploration of Inter-disciplinary practice and its relationship to site and place. Contributions from the world of science, art, design, planning, architecture and economics will be welcomed.

'Public Space-Public Knowledge.

Projected web links will animate the conference and explore the different places, issues and organizations of the participating countries through the use of multi-media technologies and web casts.

There will be an artist-led showcase in "Contested Space II'. This will show documentation of all the projects that have taken place throughout the year.

Objectives

  • To generate debate and dialogue concerning the contexts of the project.
  • To disseminate all the international projects in one place for the benefit of all participants. Partners and the public.
  • To develop material and critical context for the whole project.
