It trumped One Direction in Melbourne, and now it's become Wellington's most popular show ever.

The 2016 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has made history as the biggest crowd puller of any show staged in the capital, with 82, 000 tickets sold for the four night event.

This exceeds the previous record of 78, 000 tickets sold for the 2000 edition of the Tattoo when it was last in Wellington.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo brings together a cast of 1200 international performers.

The Tattoo's producer, Brigadier David Allfrey, said the show sold more tickets for five performances in Melbourne's Etihad Stadium than any other act.
