SENSE IN PLACE III. Cardiff, Wales Convergence Ports, Islands, Shorelines and Landmarks Artists will explore the converging multi-cultural histories and future projections of Cardiff Bay and its coastal region. Convergence sees place-as-region and will present a succession of linkages or landmarks (artworks) that encourage the audience to journey through different landscapes and histories. Past events such as the arrival and culture of sea-faring nations, the legacy of coal exportation and the first transmission of radio waves across water (Marconi) will be commemorated.
The future potential of the region is also explored through the development of access routes around Cardiff Bay and alliances between artists, port authorities, schools and colleges, the public, local institutions and international partners.
Artworks become the markers of orientation that stake out the landscape through a succession of Landmarks and Seamarks. Local and International artists will converge on the Cardiff Bay area, Flat Holm Island, the docklands and shorelines of Cardiff to create various artworks in response to the city and its history.
In September 2005 artists will arrive in Cardiff to realize their projects which will open to the public from 1st October 2005 - 1st November 2005.
Aims are:
To re-generate links between the sea, the City of Cardiff, its coastal region, waterways and islands through an exploration of its regional and multi-cultural histories
To create international dialogue and understanding.
Exhibitions and events will include
15 one-person site-specific projects.
