Midsumma – Taste of the

Melbourne’s annual celebration of gay and lesbian culture and art is also known as the Midsumma festival – the largest cultural festival of its type, celebrated in the city since 1988. You’ll find everything from performing arts to music, sports to film during this celebration.

This event is held at various venues around the city and draws more than a 15, 000 strong crowd every year.

The major highlights of the event are art and crafts workshops, live music and themed costume competitions. Guests are encouraged to wear feather costumes, sequin clothing and leather accessories. In the evening, the dancing begins and many guests are dressed up in costumes with lots of colour – anything to get noticed amongst the thousands of people in attendance.

Visitors will be excited to know that there is an abundance of visual arts displays during the festival. If you’re interested in exploring insightful exhibits, then make sure you visit the many different venues; such as the Comfort Zone, the Shifting Ground and the Queer Collective.
